Työn alla on tällä hetkellä 15 rotua, joiden soveltuvuutta projektin tavoitteisiin tarkastellaan yksityiskohtaisesti.
Projektin seuraava merkittävä etappi on katsauksen esittäminen yhdistyksen hallitukselle tammikuussa 2027.
The Crossbreeding Project Continues to Progress Systematically
The Flatcoated Retriever Crossbreeding Project Working Group met in Lahti at the end of October to review the project's progress and prepare for the next stages. The focus of the work has now shifted from compiling the application and supporting documentation to the next important phase: a more detailed evaluation of potential breeds.
The project's rationale document has now been completed, and the foundations of the crossbreeding application, along with the process for updating and supplementing it, have been carefully reviewed. At the same time, the working group has made decisions regarding the breeds that will proceed to the next stage of evaluation. However, the breeds selected for further assessment will not be published at this stage, as the working group will first focus on their thorough evaluation and comparison.
Currently, 15 breeds are under detailed review to assess their suitability for the project's goals. The fundamental principle has been clear from the very beginning: the Flatcoated Retriever must remain a Flatcoated Retriever in the future as well.
The most important factors in the working group's assessment are the preservation of working ability, trainability, temperament, and overall breed vitality. When evaluating potential breeds, appearance is not the determining factor. Instead, the focus is on characteristics that can help secure and strengthen the future of the Flatcoated Retriever in a responsible and sustainable manner.
The evaluation process draws on a wide range of resources, including available research, experiences from breed organizations, and practical observations. The working group also considers it important to become familiar with the breeds in real-life settings, such as field trials and other events, to ensure that decisions are based on the broadest possible understanding.
Throughout the project, the working group continues to closely monitor updates to the Finnish Kennel Club's crossbreeding guidelines. As these guidelines are currently being further developed, any future changes will be incorporated into the ongoing refinement of the project plan.
At the same time, the working group is developing the project's communications. A Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) section is currently under preparation, with the aim of providing members with clear and accessible information about the project's background, objectives, and progress. The FAQ will be launched in November, and the first questions and answers will also be published in Flattiviesti 4/2026.
In addition, an open webinar is being planned to increase understanding of crossbreeding projects and to provide an opportunity for constructive discussion with the support of an expert speaker. The goal is to hold this event before the end of 2026.
The next major milestone for the project will be the presentation of a progress review to the association's board in January 2027. During the spring, updates will also be provided to the membership. Until then, the working group will continue its thorough evaluation process with the aim of identifying the options that best support the future, health, and working abilities of the Flatcoated Retriever.
Keeping the Flatcoated Retriever as an Flatcoated Retriever – safeguarding health and vitality while preserving the breed's character and working abilities.
