Tavoitteemme / Our mission

Projektin tarkoituksena on selvittää, voiko roturisteytys parantaa sileäkarvaisten noutajien terveyttä ja geneettistä monimuotoisuutta. Projekti analysoi nykytilannetta, kartoittaa riskit ja hyödyt, tutkii mahdolliset risteytysrodut sekä kuulee sidosryhmiä. Tuloksena syntyy raportti ja suositus jatkotoimista (ei risteytystä, pilottiohjelma tai lisäselvitys). Projekti kestää noin vuoden, eikä sisällä vielä käytännön risteytyksiä.

The project aims to assess whether crossbreeding could improve the health and genetic diversity of Flat-Coated Retrievers. It analyzes the current situation, evaluates risks and benefits, explores potential partner breeds, and gathers stakeholder input. The outcome is a report with recommendations (no crossbreeding, a pilot program, or further study). The project lasts about 12 months and does not include actual breeding at this stage.

Terhi Kantanen

Olen Terhi Kantanen, koulutukseltani biologi. Olen opiskellut genetiikkaa yliopistossa ja opettaja-ammattini kautta opettanut genetiikkaa myös opiskelijoille. Minulla on ollut flatteja vuodesta 2005 alkaen ja ne ovat olleet minulle tärkeitä perheenjäseniä ja harrastuskavereita.

Tosiasia on, että monet koirarodut ovat tiensä päässä, sillä jalostus on kaventanut niiden geenien monimuotoisuutta liikaa, jotta sairausgeenien kasaantumista voitaisiin välttää huolellisestikaan suunnitelluin jalostusvalinnoin. Koen eettisesti tärkeäksi, että koirillemme taataan geenitasolla mahdollisuus elää terveinä mahdollisimman pitkä elämä, olivat ne sitten työ-, harrastus tai lenkkikavereita. Tämän vuoksi koen roturisteytysprojektin välttämättömäksi rotumme tulevaisuuden vuoksi. Tarkoitus ei ole viedä mitään pois flatista, ainoastaan lisätä “enemmän erilaisia geenimuotoja”, jotka toimivat jalostuksen työkaluina. Saamme risteytyksistä huolimatta, tai pikemminkin juuri niiden vuoksi, pitää hassuttelevan, työintoisen, luonteeltaan avoimen ja kauniin rotumme jatkossakin.

Tarja Koistinen

Olen Tarja Koistinen Kuopiosta. Koulutukseltani olen etologi. Ensimmäinen flätti muutti meille vuonna 2004 ja sen jälkeen on kirmattu mustien liehuturkkien kanssa pitkin metsiä lenkillä ja harrastuksissa.

Puhdasrotuisten koirien risteyttämisen näen välttämättömänä osana tulevaisuuden koirankasvatusta. Suljetut populaatiot alkavat olla perimän monimuotoisuuden osalta kutistuneet tiensä päähän. Flätissä näen pelastamisen arvoisena erityisesti luonteen, jossa aimo annos älykkyyttä ja leikkisyyttä yhdistyy omintakeisella tavalla väkevään työmotivaatioon. Odotan risteytysprojektin laajentavan flättien perimää ja sitä kautta parantavan rodun terveyttä ja elinvoimaisuutta.

Riitta Koivisto

Olen Riitta Koivisto, noutajaharrastaja vuodesta 1998, flattiharrastaja vuodesta 2007 ja kasvattaja vuodesta 2011. Noutajien rodunomaiset kokeet ja metsästystilanteiden tarjoaminen koiralle  ovat minulle se juttu. Eteenpäin ajava voima on on koko ajan ollut halu päästä koiran pään sisään ja keksiä paras tapa saada koira ymmärtämään mitä siltä halutaan, sekä saada myös kasvattaa koiria, joiden kanssa yhteistyö toimii ja jotka ovat kuitenkin oma-aloitteisia kuten hyvän metsästyskoiran kuuluu olla. Flatissa viehättää sen reippaus ja intohimoinen asenne elämään. 

Roturisteytysprojekti on mielestäni välttämätön rodun terveyden kannalta. Toivottavasti saamme samalla myös säilytettyä rodun luonteen ja metsästysominaisuudet tuleville harrastajille ja ehkä jopa parannettua niitä. 

Kaija Leinonen

Olen Kaija Leinonen, flattiharrastaja vuodesta 1981, kasvattaja vuodesta 2001. Taustalla on yliopisto-opinnot eläinten ravitsemuksesta ja jalostuksesta ja työ klinikkaeläintenhoitajana.

Flattien geenipoolin kaventuminen huolestuttaa: samat koirat toistuvat sukutauluissa, ja terveiden, toimivien, erisukuisten jalostusyksilöiden löytäminen on jatkuvasti haastavampaa.

Roturisteytysprojektissa minua kiinnostaa erityisesti käytännön toteutus ja rodun elinvoimaisuuden turvaaminen. Haluan, että myös tulevat sukupolvet saavat nauttia flatista sellaisena kuin me sen haluamme tuntea: terveestä, pitkäikäisestä ja toimivasta metsästyskoirasta, jolla on oikea flatin asenne.

Riitta Nikko

Hei vain, olen Riitta Nikko ja asun Vihdissä. Flattejä minulla on ollut useita yksilöitä vuodesta 2000 alkaen ja olen myös kasvattanut muutaman pentueen. Ammatiltani olen eläinlääkäri ja työskentelen osa-aikaisesti pieneläinklinikalla, osa-aikaisesti koulutan tulevia ja erikoistuvia eläintenhoidon ammattilaisia. Toivon pystyväni tuomaan roturisteytystyöryhmään oman kokemukseni sekä omasta että muista roduista ammattini kautta.

Tarja Palosaari

Olen Tarja Palosaari, ja tällä hetkellä minulla ensimmäinen flattini (s. 2021), joka on minun kolmas koirani. Olen tilastotieteilijä ja työskentelen epidemiologisen tutkimuksen parissa. Olen opiskellut lisäksi yliopistossa bioinformatiikkaa, joka sisälsi genetiikkaa, biologiaa sekä näihin liittyviä menetelmätieteitä. 

Roturisteytystyöryhmässä pystyn  hyödyntämään kiinnostustani koirien genetiikkaan, sairauksiin, geenitesteihin, luonteeseen, käyttäytymiseen, terveys- ja jalostustilastoihin ja geneettisiin menetelmiin sekä osaamistani tieteellisistä artikkeleista ja niiden tulosten sekä menetelmien tulkinnasta rodun paremman tulevaisuuden turvaamiseksi. 

Henna Tuononen

Olen Henna Tuononen Joensuusta. Ensimmäinen flatti tuli taloon vuonna 1992. ensimmäinen pentue syntyi vuonna 2000. Toimin pieneläinhoitajana eläinlääkäriasemalla. Olen huolissani rodun lyhytikäisyydestä ja geenipoolin kaventumisesta. Roturisteystyöryhmän toivon tuovan lisää terveyttä ja elinvoimaa flatille, unohtamatta hyvää toimintakykyä ja metsästysominaisuuksia.

Katja Virtanen

Olen Katja Virtanen ja minulla on ollut flatteja vuodesta 2013. Olen kasvattanut flatteja pienimuotoisesti vuodesta 2020. Roturisteytystyöryhmään tuon viestinnän, organisoinnin ja analysoinnin osaamista sekä intohimon selvittää asioita tuoreemman kasvattajan näkökulmasta.

Terhi Kantanen

I am Terhi Kantanen, a biologist by training. I studied genetics at university and, through my profession as a teacher, have also taught genetics to students. I have owned Flat-Coated Retrievers since 2005, and they have been important family members and companions in my hobbies and activities.

The reality is that many dog breeds are reaching a critical point, as selective breeding has narrowed their genetic diversity to such an extent that the accumulation of disease-causing genes can no longer be effectively avoided, even with carefully planned breeding decisions. I believe it is ethically important to ensure that our dogs have the genetic opportunity to live long and healthy lives, whether they are working dogs, hobby companions, or simply beloved pets.

For this reason, I see the crossbreeding project as essential for the future of our breed. The goal is not to take anything away from the Flat-Coated Retriever, but rather to introduce greater genetic diversity that can serve as a valuable tool in breeding. Despite the crossbreeding—or rather, precisely because of it—we can continue to preserve the qualities we value so highly in our breed: its playful nature, enthusiasm for work, open temperament, and beautiful appearance.

Tarja Koistinen

I am Tarja Koistinen from Kuopio, Finland. I am an ethologist by training. My first Flat-Coated Retriever joined our family in 2004, and ever since, we have spent countless hours exploring forests and enjoying various activities with our black, feather-coated companions.

I see crossbreeding between purebred dogs as an essential part of the future of dog breeding. Closed populations have, in many cases, reached the limits of what can be sustained in terms of genetic diversity. In the Flat-Coated Retriever, I believe the breed’s temperament is particularly worth preserving: a unique combination of intelligence, playfulness, and a strong motivation to work.

I hope that the crossbreeding project will broaden the genetic diversity of the Flat-Coated Retriever and, through that, improve the breed’s health and vitality.

Riitta Koivisto

I am Riitta Koivisto, a retriever enthusiast since 1998, a Flat-Coated Retriever enthusiast since 2007, and a breeder since 2011. Retriever working tests and providing dogs with opportunities to participate in real hunting situations are what truly inspire me. My driving force has always been the desire to understand how dogs think and to find the best ways to help them understand what is expected of them. I am also passionate about breeding dogs that are cooperative and easy to work with, while still retaining the initiative and independence that are hallmarks of a good hunting dog.

What I particularly love about the Flat-Coated Retriever is its cheerful nature and passionate approach to life.

In my view, the crossbreeding project is essential for the health of the breed. I hope that it will also help us preserve the breed’s characteristic temperament and hunting abilities for future enthusiasts—and perhaps even improve upon them.

Kaija Leinonen

I am Flatcoated Retriever enthusiast since 1981, and a breeder since 2001. My background includes university studies in animal nutrition and breeding, as well as work as a veterinary nurse.

The narrowing of the Flatcoated Retriever genepool concerns me: the same dogs keep recurring in pedigrees, and finding healthy, functional breeding individuals from different bloodlines is becoming increasingly challenging.

In the crossbreeding project, I'm particularly interested in the practical implementation and safeguarding the breed's vitality. I want future generations to also be able to enjoy the Flatcoat as we want to know it: a healthy, long-lived, and functional hunting dog with the true Flatcoat temperament.

Riitta Nikko

Hello, my name is Riitta Nikko, and I live in Vihti, Finland. I have owned several Flat-Coated Retrievers since 2000 and have also bred a few litters. I am a veterinarian by profession and work part-time at a small animal clinic, while also teaching future and specialized professionals in animal care. Through my professional experience, I hope to contribute to the Crossbreeding Working Group with knowledge and insights gained from both my own breed and various other breeds.

Tarja Palosaari 

I am Tarja Palosaari, and at the moment I own my first flatcoated retriever (born 2021), who is my third dog. I am a statistician and work in the field of epidemiological research. I have also studied bioinformatics at university, that included genetics, biology and methodological sciences. 

In the crossbreeding working group, I can utilize my interest in dog genetics, diseases, genetic tests, and behavior, health statistics and breeding statistics as well as genetic methods. Also my knowledge of scientific writing and the interpretation of results and methods of scientific articles can help to work for securing a better future for the breed in this working group.

Henna Tuononen

I am Henna Tuononen from Joensuu eastern Finland. I have had Flat-Coated Retrievers since the year 1992. The first litter was born in the year 2000. I work as a animal nurse at a veterinary clinic. I am concerned about the breed’s short lifespan and the narrowing of the gene pool. I hope the crossbreeding will bring increased health and vitality, without overlooking good functional ability and hunting qualities.

Katja Virtanen

My name is Katja Virtanen, and I have owned Flat-Coated Retrievers since 2013. I have been breeding Flat-Coated Retrievers on a small scale since 2020. As a member of the Crossbreeding Working Group, I bring expertise in communication, organization, and analysis, as well as a passion for investigating and understanding issues from the perspective of a newer breeder.
